On the back of a defeat in the County Intermediate Cup Final on the previous Saturday, and following their earlier defeat to Bierton FC by 1 : 0 in the Thomas Field Shield the players all knew that they owed the managers and supporters a better performance in the Tom Sparkes League Cup Final held at Winslow FC. The added incentive was that this was the first League Cup Final that Bucks CC FC had reached since the competition was renamed in memory of Tom Sparkes who had a huge involvement in the development of Bucks CC FC and the players were fired up to take the trophy back to its rightful place against old adversaries and holders Bierton FC. Even before the whistle blew to signal the kick-off, Bucks CC FC had obviously prepared well, a few changes to the line up were made and as soon as the whistle signaled the start of this enthralling encounter Bucks CC FC immediately attacked their opposition. Less than one minute had passed and an intricate passing move and a display of one touch passing football through Nando Perna and Carl Clay saw James Baxter released who certainly lost his man marker on the other side of the pitch and delivered an excellent low cross that was met by Chris Hill who smashed the ball past the keeper for a 1 : 0 lead and ensured that Bucks CC had scored in every single match this season except one. Mid way in the first half a long kick from the Bierton keeper saw a great tackle on the winger by Alex Storczynski and Bierton forced their first corner and Tom Brindley y whose in-swinging corner crept in at the far post for an equalizer. Baxter rallied his troops but ex- Arsenal hopeful Nando Perna who was giving his marker Nick Gurney a torrid time fell awkwardly and dislocated his shoulder - and came off to a standing ovation from the Bucks CC FC faithful. - he was replaced by Felice Iannone who immediately stamped his mark on the game and slotted the ball through for Anthony Kew who chipped the ball over the stranded keeper. Bucks CC FC went in at half time but knew the game was not won yet. At the start of the second half Bierton FC pushed for an equalizer looked threatening from long ball situations but the ever reliable Jody Scott made a stunning save at the near post, caught anything that came near him and could even rely on the cross bar to keep out a fierce shot - Bucks CC FC were holding firm with Clay, Kew and Iannone winning the midfield battle and Baxter and Wright providing the width! In the final few minutes the tireless Bucks CC FC players battled like warriors and played some slick football to go with it. The referee brought an end to the match - Bucks CC FC won 3 : 1 and a great performance certainty saw the best team win and the Tom Sparkes Cup was secured and taken to its rightful home. Three superb trophies secured - and Champions elect - a great season from a great team led by three wise men Frank Clay - Dean Murray and Gary Wray |
